The Virtues of Learning and Teaching the Quran

The Holy Quran is the final revelation from Allah (subhanahu wa ta'ala) to humanity. It is the eternal miracle of our beloved Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, a guide for those who seek the straight path, and a source of mercy and healing for the believing hearts. Learning the Quran — and teaching it to others — is among the most beloved acts of worship in Islam.

In this article, we explore some of the immense virtues of engaging with the Book of Allah, whether by reciting it, memorizing it, understanding it or sharing it with others.

1. The Best of People Are Those Who Learn and Teach the Quran

Among the most well-known teachings of our Prophet ﷺ is his statement that the best of people are those who learn the Quran and teach it. This single hadith elevates Quran teachers and students above many other people. Imagine being among those whom the Messenger of Allah described as "the best" — what greater honour could there be?

Whether you are a parent helping your child memorize a short surah, a student attending Tajweed classes, or a teacher correcting a beginner's pronunciation, you are part of this noble group.

2. Every Letter Brings Multiplied Reward

Our Prophet ﷺ taught us that whoever recites a single letter from the Book of Allah will receive a reward, and that reward is multiplied by ten. He explained that the Arabic letters Alif, Lam and Mim are not counted as one letter, but as three separate letters, each bringing its own reward.

Think about that for a moment. A single page of the Quran contains hundreds of letters. A single juz contains thousands. The reward of reciting the entire Quran is almost incomprehensible. This is the generosity of Allah — He gives back many times more than what we offer.

3. The Quran Will Intercede for You on the Day of Judgement

On the Day when nothing will benefit anyone except their deeds, the Quran will come as an intercessor for those who recited it and acted upon its guidance. This is one of the most beautiful promises in our religion. The very Book we read in this life will testify for us in the next.

4. The Honour of Memorizing the Quran (Hifz)

Those who memorize the Quran — known as Huffaz — hold a special status in Islam. Our Prophet ﷺ informed us that on the Day of Judgement, the Hafiz of the Quran will be told to recite, and to ascend in the levels of Paradise according to what they have memorized. Their final station will be at the last verse they could recite.

Even more beautifully, the parents of a child who memorized the Quran will be honoured on that great Day with a crown of light and special garments — a reward they receive simply because of the effort they made in raising a Hafiz.

5. The Quran Is a Source of Cure and Mercy

The Quran is described in itself as healing for the believers. It is not only a healing for spiritual ailments such as anxiety, sadness and weakness of faith, but also a means by which Allah grants relief to the body. Reciting the Quran in our homes brings tranquillity, removes the whispers of Shaytan and purifies the hearts of those who listen.

6. The Companions of the Quran in Paradise

Those who dedicate their lives to learning, reciting and acting upon the Quran will be granted the company of the noble and obedient angels. The one who recites the Quran with difficulty, struggling through it, will receive a double reward — one for the recitation and one for the effort.

This is a beautiful reminder for adults and reverts who are just starting to learn. Every difficult letter, every painful pronunciation, every slow page of effort is being counted by Allah and rewarded generously.

7. A Lasting Charity (Sadaqah Jariyah)

When a parent teaches their child the Quran, they are planting a seed of sadaqah jariyah — a continuous charity that keeps generating rewards even after they leave this world. Every time that child recites a verse, every time they teach it to their own children, every time someone else benefits from what they learned — the reward keeps flowing back to the original teacher.

This is why learning and teaching the Quran is one of the smartest investments a Muslim can make.
